I remember I used to buy Bananas in the store because I thought the front cover was funny. The cover is a perfect definition of the album itself: it’s a funny record. I doubt Deep Purple were in a serious mood when they wrote these songs (with the exception of some). There’s an overall relaxing atmosphere and songs with an uplifting mood.

There is some excellent material on the album - Sun Goes Down, Bananas, House of Pain and Walk On all hit the spot, which make up for the disappointing Razzle Dazzle and Doing It Tonight. Well done to the boys for a positive album which takes Purple down a slightly different road and of course, live some of the material will be awesome.

Bananas has every sign of being a disappointment. Jon Lord's grandiose keyboards were always a focus but he's gone, it's released in the heady age of Radiohead, and it's got one of the oddest titles and the oddest cover art that ever graced a Deep Purple album. Surprise, it's fantastic. New keyboardist Don Airey is an effective replacement, adding new sounds and styles and working the Hammond.

This leads to "Bananas" which is what Deep Purple should really be doing, the classic guitar and organ duels, but this time it´s not Blackmore and Lord, but Airey and Morse and they do a fine job. It´s a great track. "Doing it tonight" has that hypnotic riff that makes this song hard not to dislike.3/5(11).

Bananas Classic Purple sound, right down to the Gillan harmonica and vocal phrasing, keyboard and guitar interplay, and syncopated rhythms. Occasional nods to Yes here also. Doing It Tonight Gad zooks, this is the biggest surprise on the disk. Man this is a fun tune.
